Tech updates
New reactor and fuel technology with a Texas angle. Dated, newest first, and sourced.
- Oct 14, 2026 The NRC renewed and updated the design certification for Westinghouse's AP1000, folding in lessons from building Vogtle Units 3 and 4. It's good through 2066. It doesn't approve any plant by itself, but Fermi America's planned Texas reactors are AP1000s. [NRC] [Federal Register]
- Oct 7, 2026 DOE approved the Documented Safety Analysis for Last Energy's pilot reactor at Texas A&M-RELLIS. The company says DOE's readiness review comes next, before startup. [Last Energy]
- Sep 15, 2026 Blue Energy sent the NRC the first part of its construction permit application for a BWRX-300 at the Port of Victoria. Its plan pairs gas power now with a nuclear unit later. [Federal Register] [GE Vernova]
- Aug 5, 2026 Oklo's Groves isotope test reactor in Lockhart reached first criticality, meaning it held a steady, controlled chain reaction. DOE said it was the fifth reactor authorized under its Reactor Pilot Program to reach criticality that summer. [Oklo] [DOE]
- Jul 30, 2026 DOE approved the Nuclear Safety Design Agreement for Natura's 1-megawatt-thermal molten salt research reactor at Abilene Christian University. It's the first step on DOE's pilot authorization path. [NEI Magazine]
- Jun 18, 2026 Terrestrial Energy and the Texas A&M System signed a ground lease and research agreements for about 77 acres at RELLIS. The site is for a planned Integral Molten Salt Reactor plant and testing. [Terrestrial Energy] [Texas A&M]
- Apr 8, 2026 Uranium Energy got state approval and started production at Burke Hollow in South Texas. The company calls it the first new U.S. in-situ recovery uranium operation in over a decade. [SEC filing]
- Feb 13, 2026 X-energy's fuel company, TRISO-X, got an NRC license to make high-assay low-enriched uranium fuel in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. That TRISO fuel is the type planned for the Xe-100s at Long Mott. [X-energy] [Federal Register]
